04Assessment
How children are assessed
An interaction, never an ordeal: it helps the school understand how to support your child from the first day.
01
KG 1 and KG 2
A gentle screening through observation and a familiarisation visit: readiness for school, separating from the parent, following directions, toileting, motor skills and communication.
02
Grades 1 to 9
An assessment of literacy and numeracy, and of social, emotional and behavioural development. School reports from the last two years are required.
03
Grades 10 to 12
An entrance examination and the student's progress in previous years. Grade 11: Mathematics for Commerce; Mathematics and Science for Science.
Brothers and sisters of children at SSIS are given preference. Families moving from abroad can be given a special appointment that fits their time in the UAE.

07Questions
What parents ask us
Anything else? Call 02 559 6444 or WhatsApp 056 503 6875.
01What age must my child be?
Age is counted on 31 March of the year your child joins. KG 1: 4 years old. KG 2: 5. Grade 1: 6. From Grade 2, placement follows the transfer certificate and the last report card. The age rule does not apply to children already studying in the UAE.
02Can my child join in the middle of the year?
Yes, when a place is free in the grade, with a transfer certificate for the grade your child is continuing.
03We are moving to Abu Dhabi from abroad. Which grade will my child join?
A child joining at the start of a new academic year moves up to the next grade with a passed-and-promoted transfer certificate. A child joining during the year continues in the same grade.
04How big are the classes?
Up to 25 children in a KG class and up to 30 from Grade 1 to Grade 12.
05Do brothers and sisters get priority?
Yes. Siblings of children already at SSIS are given preference, and the second, third, fourth and fifth child receive a sibling discount on tuition.
06When does the school year start?
In April. The year runs from April to March in three terms: April to June, September to November, and December to March.
07What are the school hours?
KG: 7:40 am to 12:00 pm, Monday to Thursday. Grades 1 to 12: 7:40 am to 2:30 pm, Monday to Thursday. Friday: 7:40 am to 11:30 am for every grade.
08How is my child kept safe?
The campus has CCTV and security guards round the clock. Every visitor shows identification and receives a pass at the guard house. Every bus has a female attendant and GPS tracking.
09What if my child feels unwell at school?
A qualified nurse runs the school clinic throughout the school day. For anything more than first aid, the school consults its on-call doctor, takes the child to a nearby hospital if needed, and tells you at once.
10Is there a counsellor?
Yes. A qualified counsellor and wellness teacher supports students with their studies, careers and wellbeing, in confidence.
